Match the computer's video output to the monitor's input, then check the resolution, refresh rate and cable length you need. HDMI-to-HDMI and DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cables are straightforward when both devices support the required mode. A USB-C connector alone does not establish that the port can send video.
Start with both ends
| Computer or dock output | Monitor input | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI | An HDMI cable rated for your intended display mode. |
| DisplayPort | DisplayPort | A DisplayPort cable with the required capability. |
| USB-C with supported video output | USB-C, HDMI or DisplayPort | A suitable video cable or adapter for the specific pair of devices. |
| A different connector at each end | A different connector at each end | Check adapter direction and conversion requirements before buying. |
On a desktop with a separate graphics card, check which outputs belong to that card. On a laptop, check the dock as well as the laptop: the dock's output capability can affect the result.
Two direct cable choices
- Prevo HDMI-2.1-2M: a 2m cable with HDMI male connectors at both ends.
- Prevo DP14-2M: a 2m cable with DisplayPort male connectors at both ends.
Read the linked specification against the resolution and refresh rate you need. A cable's advertised maximum is not a promise that every computer, adapter and monitor combination can reach it.
Resolution and refresh rate belong together
“4K” does not tell you whether the intended connection is 30Hz, 60Hz or a higher refresh rate. HDR, colour format and other features can also affect the bandwidth needed. Write down the display mode, then check every part of the connection.
HDMI has official cable categories and certification labels. Use HDMI's cable guide when comparing them; a version number in a product name is not itself evidence that the individual cable has a certification label.
USB-C video needs a compatibility check
For a USB-C video adapter using DisplayPort Alt Mode, the computer's USB-C port must support that mode. The cable or adapter must also support the connection you are making. VESA's DisplayPort FAQ recommends checking the device documentation; a matching connector shape is not enough.
If the computer has an HDMI output and the monitor has DisplayPort, do not assume a DisplayPort-to-HDMI lead will work in reverse. Confirm the conversion direction and any power requirement before ordering.
Buying cables for an office
Record the computer or dock output, monitor input and measured cable route for each desk. Do not order identical cables merely because the monitors look similar. For desks confirmed to use HDMI, the office cable checklist brings Ethernet and display leads together in one reviewable basket.
Browse monitor cables or all cables. Product pages show the current price, length, connectors and availability.
Common questions
Does every USB-C port support a monitor?
No. Check the device documentation for supported video output and the requirements of the cable or adapter. The physical USB-C socket does not establish video capability.
Can I reverse a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable?
Do not assume it works in reverse. Check the source-to-display direction in the product specification and whether an active powered converter is required.
